Get Started

So you want to become a merchant selling products using LiteCart. Here is a checklist to get you started…

Step List

  • Install LiteCart by uploading the files via FTP and point your browser to http://www.yourdomain.com/install/. Follow the instructions on the page. If you instead would like to benefit from our software channel via Softaculous, be sure to visit http://www.softaculous.com to install LiteCart. Softaculous is also available available through many web host providers as a service.
  • Protect your store until it's ready by uncommenting the HTTP Auth protection in /.htaccess
# Protect catalog using admin .htpasswd, handy for development platforms
<IfModule mod_auth_basic.c>
  AuthType Basic
  AuthName "Restricted Area"
  AuthUserFile /fullpath/to/admin/.htpasswd
  Require valid-user
</IfModule>
  • Edit your store information by going to Admin → Settings → Store Info. To set head title and meta description go to Admin → Translations and search for index:head_title and index:meta_description. In earlier versions these translation keys are named “index.php:xxxxx”.
  • Install any extra languages by going to Admin → Languages → Add New Language. Don't forget to complete missing translations by going to Admin → Translations → Show only untranslated
  • Add translations for new languages. See Admin → Translations. Don't forget to manually translate some database related objects:
    • Admin → Catalog → Delivery Statuses
    • Admin → Catalog → Sold-out Statuses
    • Admin → Orders → Order Statuses
  • Install any extra currencies by going to Admin → Currencies → Add New Currency.
  • Go to Admin → Countries and disable any countries to which you are not selling.
  • Set up some geographical zones by going to Admin → Geo Zones. These will be used for tax and shipping and it's best to keep them separate, example: My Shipping Zone, My Tax Zone, etc. LiteCart Add-ons
  • Go to Admin → Tax and set up some tax classes and rates.
  • Now you are ready to start creating your products under Admin → Catalog → Add New Product.
  • Install and configure some shipping- and payment modules under Admin → Modules.
  • Create some information pages e.g. privacy policy, conditions, shipping and returns. Admin → Pages
  • If you migrated to LiteCart from another system make sure old URLs are redirected to their new destinations. This can be done inside .htaccess or LiteCart's own routing modules. Redirect Links From Another Platform

Discover our add-ons on the official website. Get help from other merchants in the LiteCart forums. LiteCart Add-ons

Make sure you have all shipping and payment modules you need. Do some testing by browsing around making sure everything looks okay.

If you are going to modify the platform. Consider virtual modifications (vQmod technology) rather than permanently changing core files. Otherwise you will loose your changes while upgrading to newer versions. How to Create A vQmod

Extras

When you are ready to go live

  • If you enabled the HTTP Auth protection for the catalog, disable it so guests are allowed entrance.
  • Sign up for a Google Analytics account and insert the tracking code into ~/includes/yourtemplate.catalog/layouts/default.inc.php. Google should automatically start indexing your website.
  • Sign up for a Google Search Console account (formerly Webmaster Tools) and add your sitemap: http://www.yoursite.com/feeds/sitemap.xml
  • Keep an eye on your search engine rank position. There are several tools out there. Wincher

Now begins a great journey.

Wish you the best of luck!
